After we let our traditional Kanban board die, we waited until a couple of managers and one of the directors said “Hey, you know what? We can use the space where that Kanban board is to manage and visualize our work!” So we re-built it Lean Startup style. All of the details about how we did this are here.
Basically we decided who were consumers of the data and what existing processes and reports could be displaced with better visualization. We sent out a survey, mocked it up and made a video overview that we posted to our Yammer site.
Of course when we were done we needed people to put their work tickets on the board so we drew this:
